Nestle doubles New Zealand and Fiji for global locations

Nestle has filmed a new commercial for its ice cream brand Haagen-Dazs in various locations throughout New Zealand and Fiji. Ode to Flavour shows a team visiting remote beaches, jungle terrain and exposed mountainsides in search of the best flavours extracted directly from natural sources.

The production shot on Hen and Chicken Islands off the west coast of Auckland, as well as near Queenstown and Wanaka in the central South Island. Chris Moore, of Goodby Silverstein & Partners, said: “New Zealand and Fiji were chosen for a number of reasons, namely the regions have beautiful offerings in regards to creating one region to look like many. New Zealand, for example, has snow-capped mountains, waterfalls and regional farmland all within a small area and not hard to access.”

Holly Dean, of The Sweet Shop in Auckland, said: “Based on the story - search the world for hard-to-find mountains and lone raspberry plants - each location doubled as various spots from around the world, though none were specific. They chose those that give the feel of certain places. Hen and Chicken Islands, for example, looks like Madagascar from the air.”

Shooting in Nadi, in Fiji, proved convenient in the sense that it is only a three-hour flight from New Zealand. However, it proved a challenge to shoot in as the country has a far less developed filmmaking infrastructure than New Zealand.

The crew shot in high-definition using a Canon 5D, which was very practical. Mr Moore added: “This is great for on-location ‘run and gun’ type jobs. The camera, with the right operator, Ian McCarroll, can be perfect for a job like this. The 5D has a very fast set-up time and works well with tight spaces and limited light. It’s also easy to move about.”
