MPAA executive among those fighting for 20% NJ tax incentive
An executive from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) was among those testifying at a meeting in Secaucus, New Jersey, last week, according to the Star-Ledger. The meeting was held to hear arguments from people in favour of keeping the state’s 20% tax credit.
Angela Miele, a Vice-President of the MPAA, said: “People think of all the glitz and glamour that the motion picture industry brings, but what it really brings is lots of jobs. Our member companies operate like all other for-profit businesses and they will go where it is cheapest.”
According to the MPAA, nearly 7,000 production workers through New Jersey collected over USD500 million in wages through the course of 2008. In addition, the incentive scheme has been instrumental in attracting productions such as Law and Order: SVU, Julie & Julia and The Wrestler.
Despite the testimonies, the incentive scheme is widely expected to be removed before the end of June.
