Australia removes 70% minimum spend for filming incentives
Foreign productions looking to qualify for Australia’s Locations Offset scheme will no longer have to spend at least 70% of their total budgets in the country.
Australia offers a 15% Location Offset to foreign productions with budgets ranging between AUSD15 million and AUSD50 million. However, the high Australian dollar and the 70% qualifying figure has discouraged many productions from shooting in the country.
Jackie O’Sullivan, of industry lobby group Ausfilm, told The Australian: “The removal of the 70% spend requirement enhances Australia’s ability to provide a more flexible approach to international productions coming to Australia.”
In addition, companies looking to become eligible for the Post, Digital and Visual Effects Production incentive will be able to spend less. The government has reduced the qualifying spend from AUSD5 million to just AUSD500,000.
