Hornbach utilises remote feel and lower prices of South Africa

German home improvement firm Hornbach has filmed its latest advertising spot in South Africa. The ad, called Cow, shows two men building a porch on a remote hut. Realising a nearby cow has eaten the last of their nails, they use a chainsaw to recover them (off-screen) and finish the job.

Nils Schwemer, Managing Director of Stink in Berlin, said: “We considered shooting in Argentina and Chile, but settled on South Africa because it was the best location at the best price. We shot in a small hut an hour or so outside Cape Town and built the small porch for the shoot.”

Stillking Films’ Location Scout discovered the hut after about two weeks of searching. The location itself was intended purely to be remote and doesn’t have a specific setting.

Rudi Rossouw, a Producer with Stillking in Cape Town, said: “Our scout lives in the area and found the hut. It took a little while to get permission to film there as we had to put the owner up in a hotel.”

The cow is shown eating a small plastic bag filled with nails. In reality the bag was made of a special material that dissolved in the cow’s stomach and the nails were actually slender slices of chocolate.

Mr Schwemer added: “We had a great trained cow – as much as you can train a cow to do anything!”
