Ontario production soars between 2008 and 2009

Production throughout Ontario’s audio-visual industry rose by a substantial 41% through 2009 compared to the previous year’s figures, with foreign projects alone showing an increase of 114% on 2008, according to the Ontario Media Development Corporation.

Peter Finestone, film commissioner at the Toronto Film and Television Office, said: “Ontario offers solid tax credits that are dependable, as well as 30 years of experience.”

Foreign producers have been able to take advantage of a tax credit rise from 18% to 25% since the end of 2008, while federal credit of 16% for eligible labour costs is another available incentive. In addition, an all-spend film tax credit of 25% has been introduced in the last few months.

The impact of the recession on global production has been a key factor in Ontario’s success, with crews looking for more favourable shooting conditions and attractive incentives.

Donna Zuchlinski, Ontario film commissioner, added: “Ontario’s world-class facilities and competitive tax credits also attracted a number of productions shot outside the Province to do their post-production and visual effects here.”
