Maryland's Rebate Programme Ammended
Maryland's Employer Wage Rebate Grant Programme has just been amended. For each fiscal year (which begins on the 1st of July), the programme now has $4 million to attract filmmakers to the state. A qualifying production can receive a rebate of up to 25% of the direct costs of the film production activity. This new bill does not cap the total amount of the award to each company and provides that the actual amount disbursed is at the discretion of the Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED).
To qualify, the production must incur at least $500,000 in total direct costs in the State and at least 50% of the production’s filming must occur in Maryland. In addition, the production must have nationwide distribution. Applications are made to the DBED. Grant recipients will be selected by the Secretary of the Department based upon merit and economic benefit to the State.
An exemption from the 5% state sales tax is available to qualified feature, television, cable, commercial, documentary and music video projects.
