Utah boosts filming incentive as Rhode Island considers cut

The state of Utah has boosted its filming incentive tax break by 5%, while the Governor’s Office in Rhode Island is recommending an end to its existing incentive. This is despite news that Wes Anderson’s new film Moonrise Kingdom will be filming there.

Utah has increased its figure from 20% to 25%. This brings it level with New Mexico, which has attracted a series of major productions recently including Cowboys & Aliens, True Grit and Thor. The extra 5% will be funded using nearly USD7 million from the state Treasury.

At the moment Rhode Island offers a 25% transferable tax credit but Governor Lincoln Chafee wants to get rid of it as part of plans to reduce the state deficit. Despite the incentive uncertainty, Wes Anderson has announced his new film will shoot in Rhode Island with stars including Bruce Willis, Bill Murray and Ed Norton.

Steven Feinberg, Executive Director at the Rhode Island Film & TV Office, said: “We are very pleased that our hard-working local crew, talent pool and exceptional Rhode Island locations will be given the opportunity to shine in a movie that will be seen by a world-wide audience.”

It’s not clear whether the film will be affected by the proposed changes to the incentive scheme.
