After the commercial success of their recent adaptation of John le Carré’s The Night Manager, AMC and BBC have announced their latest co-production in the form of The Spy Who Came in from the Cold.

Simon Beaufoy, whose previous writing credits include Slumdog Millionaire and Everest, will spearhead the new series. The Ink Factory, the production company behind The Night Manager will return for the show.

The Night Manager, BBC, AMC. TV, Show, Series, Tom Hiddleston, Hugh LaurieInspired by real events at the height of the Cold War, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold follows a British Spy as he attempts to infiltrate the operations of the Communist party in East Germany.

Co-CEO of The Ink Factory, Simon Cornwell explains: “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is an utterly gripping story, and one of the great books of the twentieth century. We are looking forward enormously to bringing it to a twenty-first century audience.”

Adding to Cornwell’s sentiment, le Carré himself notes: “I'm very excited by the project, and have great confidence in the team.”

While the show’s locations have yet to be finalised, the production is expected to travel to a multitude of different countries. Scenes for The Night Manager were shot in Zermatt, London, Majorca and Morocco.

Another recent adaptation of John le Carré’s work, Our Kind of Traitor, was shot on a global scale. The production visited Marrakech, London, Finland, Switzerland and Paris in 2014.

The popularity of US-UK co-productions can be attributed to the UK’s competitive film incentive and advanced infrastructure. In the case of high-end television shows, a minimum of GBP1 million per broadcast hour must be spent in order to claim a 25% tax rebate.
