BBC films on location in Shetland Islands for TV crime drama

The BBC is filming a new crime drama on location in the Shetland Islands, a region north of mainland Scotland that has a rich cultural history. Ann Cleeves’ murder mystery novel Red Bones is set in Shetland and the TV adaptation also takes the islands’ name.

Andy Steven is with Promote Shetland and spoke to Herald Scotland: "The combination of the unique Shetland backdrop, together with a fine cast will showcase Shetland and we hope will inspire viewers to explore these stunning islands for themselves."

Neil Henderson is with Shetland Islands Council and spoke to local press: “The Shetland production is an incredibly exciting project since it is simply the biggest drama-based production ever to have been set in the islands and backed by a major studio (ITV) with a highly professional production team.”

The hope is that the Red Bones adaptation could boost Shetland’s profile and increase film tourism in the region. Shetland has almost 1,700 miles of coastline and balances the well-being of its natural environment with playing host to Europe’s largest oil shipment terminal.
