Buenos Aires doubles for Nigeria and India in Shelterbox ad

A poll of top production industry professionals recently carried out by Variety found Buenos Aires is considered one of the world’s best doubles for many international locations, partly because of its European and particularly French cultural heritage.

Chicago-based Optimus Productions recently shot on the outskirts of the city to double for countries including India, Nigeria and Brazil for a commercial for aid organisation Shelterbox.

The advert shows a range of different people of all ages using the boxes for storage and other purposes as they no longer need aid.

Joe Tipre, a producer for Optimus, said: “We were going for the multiple location look and we knew David Preizler at Nube Pictures.”

The advert focuses on recovery. Veronica Miller, executive director of Shelterbox in the US, said: “We wanted to show how people rebuild their lives.”

Despite the range of international settings, the advert was entirely shot in Buenos Aires.

Mr Preizler said: “Buenos Aires has an eclectic mix of architectural styles so it credibly doubles for European cities, American cities and different time periods.”

He added that shooting permits cost between $300 and $500 a day and should be applied for five days before, while filming in some places can be restricted to weekends.
