Canal Digital ad uses US aircraft carrier
Aircraft carrier the USS Hornet in San Francisco has been used as the filming location for a new spot from Canal Digital.
The ad was made by Swedish production company FlodellFilm and shows two pilots walking across the deck of the carrier in modern combat flight gear before climbing into an antique, pedal-powered plane.
The carrier is now a museum and FlodellFilm negotiated with the Aircraft Carrier Hornet Foundation to film there.
Producer Magnus Akerstedt said: “Taking down a safety fence on the deck was one of the most expensive things we did and there’s the problem of other ships, buildings and the shoreline in the background of shots.”
Stock footage was used for an opening establishing shot of the carrier at sea, while the shore and other boats that appeared in the background were removed in post-production.
Luckily, the shoot didn’t fall foul of San Francisco’s notoriously windy weather. Mr Akerstedt said: “We were lucky to have no wind on the day, so the smoke effects worked well.”
