Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman film The Railway Man on location in Queensland
Oscar winners Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman are filming The Railway Man on location in Queensland. The project travels to Australia having already spent several weeks filming in Edinburgh and North Berwick in Scotland.
The feature tells the true story of Scottish serviceman Eric Lomax who was was captured by the Japanese in World War II and was among those forced to build the infamous Burmese ‘Death Railway’.
From its base at the Village Roadshow Studios near Brisbane, The Railway Man will film around the Gold Coast (pictured above), including the North Ipswich Railyards.
Ros Bates is Arts Minister in Queensland: “Screen Queensland has invested AUD700,000 in The Railway Man through its production programme, following initial development investment in 2009. The production will generate an estimated AUD6.3 million expenditure and 235 employment opportunities for Queensland cast and crew.

Queensland recently hosted the lavish but short-lived Steven Spielberg-produced TV series Terra Nova. Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby has been filmed in Sydney and the city is also scheduled to host Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine film at Fox Studios in Sydney from August this year.
