European filming

Hi there,

We”re currently putting together a documentary that will be following two people traveling around europe/backpacking.
It will be shot on Sony PMW-EX1 so the camera isn”t going to be a large shoudler mounted one and we are wondering what permits are needed if any.

The whole look will be very low key and I”ve read on a lot of websites with regard to permits that x,y or z country is stricter for permits than Europe but can”t find how strict Europe is.
Since the people involved are essentially toursits will we get away with following this line?

Hi Natasha,
Are you American? If so you need Carnet for the Camera in All EU countries. If you are from Europe – EU – you’ll need just documents for the camera if somebody makes problems. Just to prove that it’s yours or rented. Especialy in my country Bulgaria you will not have any problems with this. So take it as an invitation.

Hi Natasha with a low key approach you wont need any permits (at least in European countries I know). However its good to inform the local film commission in case you need a special location, close a street or if you want to involve more people etc..Film Commissions are listed here on TheLocationGuide.

Hello Natasha,
unless you enter private property you will not need any permit if you keep it low profile / news gathering style. If you are just coming with the Sony PMW-EX1 and some other small equipment you will not need a Carnet ATA. In Italy you should be OK. But the police in historic town centres in places like Rome and Florence can be very strict and if they see a camera on a tripod they may well stop you filming. If you need any help when you get to Italy, let us know! http://www.filmitaly.co.uk

I am currently shooting with the EX1 in Rio Brazil in the favelas without a hitch but have shot tons with the same camera in the UK and Europe. Normally never have a problem just occasionally when on sticks (tripod)
