I, Daniel Blake named Outstanding British Film at the BAFTAs

As many predicted, after being awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, I, Daniel Blake was crowned as this year’s Outstanding British Film during Sunday night’s BAFTA ceremony.

Filmed entirely in Newcastle upon Tyne, Ken Loach’s scathing drama about the current state of England’s welfare system was produced by Sixteen Films, Why Not Productions and Wild Bunch. The film received funding from the BFI during production

While Damien Chazelle’s La La Land came away with a sizeable win - five BAFTAs including Best Film - it wasn’t able to match the runaway success that had occurred at the Golden Globes. The film’s iconic opening scene required a long stretch of the Los Angeles freeway to be shut down.

Speaking to TLG about the scene, La La Land’s Supervising Location Manager, Robert Foulkes explained: “obtaining permissions to pull off this ambitious scene involved several entities: CalTrans/DOT, Metro and CHP/Highway Patrol, along with support from the CFC (California Film Commission).”

The underdog of the night, Garth Davis’s Lion was able to snag Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor for Dev Patel. The project used a number of rarely depicted locations throughout Tasmania and Calcutta. India Take One provided production services for the film.
