Independent film We Can Be Heroes shoots at The Bottle Yard Studios
Production has begun on the independent film, We Can Be Heroes as scenes are being shot at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol. Up to 17 days of location filming are also expected to take place at Kings Head Park in Bishopsworth, with the Bristol Film Office providing logistical support.
Produced by Thomasina Gibson and adapted from Catherine Bruton’s novel of the same name, We Can Be Heroes follows the adventure of three young children to uncover the plans of a suspected suicide bomber, one of whom had a father who was killed during the September 11th terrorist attacks.
Gibson explains: ‘we chose to base We Can Be Heroes at The Bottle Yards Studios primarily because they're local then simply because we felt they were best placed to service our needs in terms of location, costs, facilities and staff. The welcome from Fiona and her team has been amazing and the support from other on-site companies has been really encouraging. We're delighted to be here’.
35 local creatives have been brought onboard for the project, while newcomers Toby Haste, Marissa Patel and Sam Cox are set to star as the film’s three main leads.
Site Director of The Bottle Yard Studios, Fiona Francombe adds: ‘we are delighted to welcome Heroes Productions Ltd to The Bottle Yard Studios and to be able to support them in their new feature film. We have built up a comprehensive range of on-site tenants to service productions based at our studios, so it’s great to see these on-hand resources being used again by productions working on-site, as well as the talent and facilities from the wider Bristol region’.
The Bottle Yard Studios has become one of the UK’s most popular sites for filming outside of London, where studio space is scarce. A number of prolific productions to have filmed on the premises include the BBC’s Sherlock, Poldark and Wolf Hall.
Productions of all sizes can gain access to the UK’s Film Tax Relief as the programme simply requires that at least 10% of a given budget is spent locally in the country. A 25% tax rebate is then provided, capped at 80% of the overall expenditure.
