ITV’s dramatisation of the Hatton Garden burglary to shoot in Central London
ITV have commissioned a new four-part drama entitled Hatton Garden, to be penned by the BAFTA-award winning screenwriter, Jeff Pope (Philomena). Principal photography for the project will begin this month, utilising locations throughout Central London.
Produced by Imogen Cooper, Jeff Pope and Terry Windsor, Hatton Garden will star Timothy Spall, Kenneth Cranham and Brian F. O’Byrne.
ITV's Head of Drama, Polly Hill explains: “after the critical acclaim of Little Boy Blue, we are delighted to commission Jeff Pope's new drama, Hatton Garden. Jeff is a master at bringing these true stories to screen and these dramas have always been and continue to be an important part of ITV drama. I think the audience will be fascinated by this story and Jeff's compelling dramatisation of it.”
Jeff Pope, Head of Factual Drama at ITV Studios adds: “this is one of the most high profile crimes of the last decade and we wanted to understand what had happened - and why it had happened. The research threw up some fascinating detail and blew away many of the misconceptions about this story. It was not about a bunch of 'loveable old blokes', many box holders lost everything in the raid and we will reflect this. But the planning was clever and the characters involved unique.”
The 2015 Hatton Garden jewellery heist saw four elderly men escape with up to GBP200 million in stolen goods. While three of the four men were later sentenced, the case gained notoriety for the complexity of the robbery and the use of power drills to create an opening in a thick concrete wall.
High-end television productions can receive a 25% tax rebate upon filming in the UK. A required spend of GBP1 million per broadcast hour is required to access the incentive.
A cinematic adaptation of the Hatton Garden burglary is also currently in production. Starring Michael Caine and Ray Winstone, A Night In Hatton Garden is now filming in Margate.
