James Cameron considers practicalities of Chinese co-productions
James Cameron has declared his interest in bringing audiovisual projects to China in co-production agreements. Cameron is more interested in studio infrastructure, given his specialism in 3D production, but he’s agreed that China is worth serious consideration.
Cameron spoke to Reuters in Beijing: “We're all looking very seriously at the possibility of a co-production. The question is what's required of us? In terms of configuring the market for the Chinese marketplace and what economic benefit do we get in return?
“If it works - and I want to definitely stress if - it seems to me it could be very advantageous to the Chinese film community, because for us to do a film like Avatar which is an entirely studio shoot, we wouldn't be here for the scenery.
“We'd be bringing in infrastructure to do virtual production, to do 3D photography and so on, which I would think would be a positive technology exchange into this film-making community.”
Beijing is having its world moment right now. If you’re in the movies and you haven’t been to Beijing, you’re kind of missing where things are really happening.
Rob Minkoff, Director
China is now firmly in the Hollywood spotlight after a week of positive publicity. Cameron’s comments come days after Disney and Marvel announced a definite Chinese co-production agreement for Iron Man 3, while the production team behind new James Bond feature Skyfall has released a video blog of their Shanghai shoot.
Director Rob Minkoff spoke to the LA Times last night just before the Beijing International Film Festival: “Like Paris in the 1920s, Beijing is having its world moment right now. If you’re in the movies and you haven’t been to Beijing, you’re kind of missing where things are really happening.”
