Location filming challenges continue in New York City after Storm Sandy

Productions filming on location in New York City continue to face challenges in the aftermath of Storm Sandy. Finding alternative locations to those damaged by the storm is one issue, but there are less obvious problems, like restrictions on parking facilities.

Location Managers often finalise parking 48 hours ahead of time for larger shoots, but this kind of advance planning isn’t possible at the moment, Bloomberg Businessweek reports.

Teddy Yoon is a Producer and Location Manager for Majestic Hour Productions in New York City and spoke to the outlet: “[Right now] it’s parking ‘as available’. If you’re dealing with a company that has a couple of 15-passenger vans, that’s not a big deal. If you’re dealing with a company that’s like, say, Law & Order that has major trucks and motor homes, it becomes a bit of a situation.”

The Mayor’s Office of Film, Theatre and Broadcasting cancelled all location filming permits for New York City last week after Sandy swept through the city. Productions have been authorised on a case-by-case basis this week as the clean-up operation continues.
