Filming on location in Kazakhstan

The Republic of Kazakhstan lies in Central Asia with China and Russia among its neighbours. Its arid landscapes are dominated by desert terrain and wooded plains - or steppes - in the north. Further south the fertility of the land grows and develops into sandy plains and mountains in the south.

Kazakhstan’s limited production industry is focused on the former capital, Almaty, in the north of the country towards the border with Russia. Its domestic film industry dates back to the late 1920s and now a handful of production houses offer a small number of 35mm and digital cameras, while a studio can also be found in the capital. Producers will need to bring in their own crew.

Almaty is accessible by air, but four-wheel-drive vehicles are needed for producers venturing outside the city. Low production costs and the hospitality of the local people are major selling points.
