The appeal of Latvia's solid crew base, low production costs and Riga Motion Studio have been enhanced by two competitive filming incentives.
Latvia’s national incentive scheme will refund 20 to 25% of the foreign
production costs incurred during filming in the country.
All foreign film productions serviced or co-produced by Latvian production companies are eligible to apply for this public funding opportunity.
Riga's Film Fund also offers a cash rebate of up to 20% for filming in the city and a further 10% for using Riga-based companies.This can be combined with the national scheme but cannot exceed the 25% limit.
The industry produces three to four features, around 20 documentaries and numerous commercials a year.
Climate
Latvia has four distinct seasons. January is the coldest month with daytime temperatures averaging around -10C, but in some cases it can go down to -20C with strong north-easterly winds. Heavy snowfall is also possible in the winter months from December to March. It is often breezy and humid due to the proximity of the Baltic Sea. In summer (June to August) daytime temperatures reach 25C. The summers are mostly dry but with the risk of thunderstorms at the end of the day. July is the warmest month with an average temperature of 20C. Annual precipitation is about 400-600 mm.
