Virginia played a key role in the Civil War and Richmond was the Confederate capital throughout the conflict. Eligible productions looking for location authenticity in telling Civil War stories can access state filming incentives, which include a base 15% tax credit.

Mercy Street, a miniseries following two volunteer nurses on either side of the war, filmed in the original Mansion House Hospital and throughout Petersburg.

While not a period piece, Daniel Ragussis's drama Imperium, about a young FBI agent who infiltrates a gang of white supremacists, was shot entirely in Virginia. The film features scenes in Chesterfield, Petersburg and Hopewell.

Production spending in Virginia reached USD382 million in 2013, according to figures released by the Governor’s Office towards the end of 2014. At the time the Virginia Film Office reiterated its commitment to TV production, stressing the long-term economic benefits of television shoots.

Loving is a significant American story that should be told and I am happy to announce it will be filmed in Virginia.

Climate

Virginia has a mild coastal climate, with winter temperatures in Richmond generally falling to about 2C and summer conditions reaching about 26C. Rainfall is evenly spread throughout the state, although the mountainous west tends to see more.

Temperatures fall slightly in western regions as the elevation rises and the Appalachian Mountains can see considerable winter snowfall. Other parts of the state see little snow. Tropical cyclones are the worst severe weather threat for Virginia, although it sees about seven hurricanes a year as well, mainly during August and September. Thunderstorms occur mainly in southern regions of the state.
