Mad Max sequel boosts studio facility in New South Wales mining town

Fury Road, the latest sequel in the Mad Max franchise, has booked studio space in New South Wales, giving a local studio facility its first long-term production. The film plans to shoot in the mining town of Broken Hill but has been delayed due to rain and flooding.

Broken Hill was chosen as it usually offers barren landscapes that suit the story’s post-apocalyptic setting, but unseasonal rains last year left the region covered in wild flowers and then flooding followed. The Broken Hill Film Studios are on the site of the city’s old power station and with continuing renovations it’s set to become one of Australia’s top five production facilities.

Wincen Cuy, Mayor of Broken Hill, said: “It is envisaged that once fully developed the combined film studio and precinct will generate over ten years an estimated AUSD167 milion (USD169 million) in indirect benefits to Broken Hill with an average of 161 full-time equivalent jobs per annum.”

Fury Road is set to star Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult and will be directed by series veteran George Miller.
