Mad Max sequel switches filming locations from New South Wales to Namibia

The long-delayed Mad Max sequel Fury Road has been confirmed for a Namibia shoot. George Miller’s film was development for Broken Hill in New South Wales but those plans were halted earlier this year when unseasonal heavy rain turned the place into a bed of wild flowers.

There were unprecedented rains in the centre of Australia and the great salt lakes which you can drive across are now full of pelicans and fish.

Miller talked to BBC News about the delay: “There were unprecedented rains in the centre of Australia and the great salt lakes which you can drive across are now full of pelicans and fish. Luckily Happy Feet and Mad Max are both Warner Bros and we collectively decided to delay [Mad Max] by a year. But it still hasn't dried out, so we're going to Namibia where the desert is desert.”

The production was originally set to shoot at the Broken Hill Film Studios, as well as on location outside the town, but announced back in August that it was pulling out. Despite the obvious disappointment the city council said it had made around AUD2 million from the project’s pre-production.
