Mississippi advances plans to boost per-production film incentive caps

Mississippi is advancing plans to increase the cash feature productions can claim through the state’s filming incentive programme. Currently producers can get a cash rebate of up to 30% with a per-production payment cap of USD8 million; authorities want an increase to USD10 million.

Mississippi is positioning itself as a serious filmmaking contender in the southern US, a necessary move given that nearby Louisiana is now a national production hub. The recently-opened Mississippi Film Studios at Canton offers a 36,000 sq-ft sound stage and the state has had a profile boost over the past year with the massive success of The Help.

The bill to increase the production cap will move to the state House shortly for consideration.
