New alliance formed to smooth Australia-China co-productions
The Australia China Screen Alliance has been created to smooth the way for more co-productions between the two countries. The nations have had a co-production treaty in place for three years now.
The new alliance is intended to take advantage of this as a subsidiary of the Screen Producers Association of Australia (SPAA). Geoff Brown, Executive Director of the SPAA, said: “This year’s box office gross [in China] may close at USD1.6 billion, and is expected to get to USD4.5 billion in the next five years. We are one of the first countries to be making such a serious effort on co-productions with China, which means we have a head start.”
Chinese box-office figures between January and June 2010 increased by 86% compared to the same period in 2009, mainly as a result of Hollywood productions 2012 and Avatar.
