New film studio proposed for development in Massachusetts
A new film studio could be developed in the town of Westborough in the eastern US state of Massachusetts. The facility would be only 30 miles away from New England Studios but could help attract more productions like Mark Wahlberg’s The Fighter.
Diaspora Capital is proposing to convert a former Westborough hospital into a 96,000-square-foot sound stage, alongside apartments, shops and a hotel. Anton L Nel is head of the company and spoke to the Boston Herald: “We’re not trying to be the next Hollywood; we’re trying to create a destination for the town.”
Any development decisions are still some way off as the site itself is registered as a historic building and would need to be taken over by the city first. Massachusetts’ appeal as a filming location could grow in 2013 when New England Studios is scheduled to offer four 18,000-square-foot sound stages.
