New HBO series to film on location in California at the end of January

Big Little Lies, a brand new series commissioned by HBO and an adaptation of the book of the same name will begin filming on location in Monterey, California at the end of January. HBO has frequented the west coast as a filming location in the past, with Mad Men partially being filmed on location at Big Sur which is close to Monterey.

Released in 2014, Liane Moriarty’s original novel revolves around the relationship between three mothers brought together by their children sharing the same school in Australia. The current list of actors set to star in the show includes Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, who are also operating as producers.

Rich King of Rich King Casting explains: “we’re going to be all over the Monterey area, that's where the story’s supposed to take place... we're doing some of the exterior filming there to make it look like we’re filming there (Australia).”

California currently offers an appealing incentives programme, with up to 20% in tax credits available for feature films and television pilots with a minimum budget of USD1 million, and a further 25% for independent projects and relocating television series. There is an uplift of 5% on offer in conjunction with the 20% scheme if certain requirements are met, such as filming outside the 30 mile zone of Los Angeles.

HBO was able to take advantage of the incentive programme by relocating the filming of its political comedy series Veep from Maryland to California in 2015. This was only one of many shows which relocated including American Horror Story and Secrets and Lies.

Filming will commence from January 26th to February 1st.
