New York’s Steiner Studios considers expansion as location filming demand grows
Steiner Studios, in New York City’s Brooklyn Naval Yard, is considering a long-term expansion plan. Owners are considering investing USD400 million over a 12-year period and adding classrooms, offices and New York street sets.
New stages were opened at Steiner Studios just recently in March 2012, but the popularity of New York’s filming incentives means longer-term expansion is looking like a good investment. The new development is being referred to as a media campus and would span some 50 acres when completed.
Andrew H Kimball is President and Chief Executive of the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, and spoke to the New York Times: “We have the right geography - this is the only place in the city where you could do a 50-acre media campus of this kind, and we have the right Mayor and Governor who recognise that this will create the kinds of 21st Century jobs that are critical to the city’s economy.”

The studios are applying for nearly USD40 million from city, state and federal authorities to help hook up the new development to New York’s infrastructure over the years.
New York State is mounting a serious challenge to California for US production supremacy with more generous filming incentives and recently-improved post-production tax credits.
