New Zealand Government pledges four-year financial support for productions

The New Zealand Government has announced that a total of NZD305 million will be set aside over the next four years for the betterment of the national production industry. The investment will allow New Zealand to remain competitive against the ever-expanding global locations industry.

In 2016, Auckland’s production industry saw one of its most successful years to date with a revenue of NZD972 million. New Zealand’s 20% cash grant incentive has played a huge part in securing the country’s production profile, with an additional 5% available to productions that incur a significant, long-lasting economic impact.

Dean Butchers, General Manager of Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development states: “the grant system is the foundation on which our screen sector continues to be built, so we are delighted to see the Government’s renewed commitment outlined by ministers Bridges and Barry today, including the substantial commitment to the domestic industry. The Government’s consistent support gives industry and the private sector confidence to invest.”

Dean continues: “we are on target for another record year of issuing Council permits for filming in public spaces, and with the Kumeu Studios set to expand with two new 2500m2 sound stages operational by next year, and ongoing strong interest in its world-class facilities from producers in China, the US and around New Zealand, the medium to long-term future for our regional industry is looking very positive.”

Among Auckland’s recently hosted productions are the third season of Ash vs Evil Dead, and the upcoming Netflix/ABC/TVNZ co-production, The Legend of Monkey.

Kumeu Film Studios was recently adapted from a custom-built production facility. The site, which currently boasts two water tanks, one sound stage and one backlot, was originally constructed for use on the upcoming feature film, Meg.
