Film production treaty expected between NZ and China within weeks
New Zealand and China are expected to sign a film production treaty within the next few weeks. Films produced in New Zealand under the co-production agreement will be considered local productions in the Chinese market.
Chinese productions stand to benefit from the high level of filmmaking experience available in New Zealand. This could also help Chinese filmmakers break into the western film markets more easily.
Richard Duncan, of Waitakere City Council, which co-owns the largest film production facilities in Auckland with Tony Tay Group, said: “The agreement is significant because it means that films produced in collaboration with Chinese filmmakers will not compete with foreign movies for access to the China market.”
He added: “The scene is therefore set for greater involvement in the Chinese film industry by New Zealand filmmakers.”
