Crowns & Owls capture Mediterranean feel filming for Ted Baker in Wales

Filmmaking collective Crowns & Owls sought the Mediterranean feel of Portmeirion in north Wales for a new campaign for Ted Baker’s SS15 fashion collection. Short film Pinch Me follows a well-dressed gentleman exploring an exotic but secluded coastal village.

Crown & Owls stayed within the UK for the shoot as it was important for the Ted Baker brand to remain true to its British heritage.

Portmeirion was built between 1925 and 1975 in the style of an Italian village and is most famous for its role in Patrick McGoohan’s 60s TV drama The Prisoner.

“It is a recognisably British location and at the same time is almost tropical in the visuals it offers,” explains Stephen Whelan of creative agency White Lodge: “It’s visually distinct but also quite a secluded filming location, which is useful if you’re working on a product launch that’s confidential or needs a degree of secrecy. The local council was very co-operative in helping set up the shoot.”

Wales continues to grow in popularity as an international filming location, although shoots generally base themselves in the south of the country.

Fantasy drama Da Vinci’s Demons has spent three seasons using the Swansea area as a stand-in for Renaissance Italy and the pilot for new TV drama The Bastard Executioner – from Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter – will also film locally.

Pinewood Studio Wales opened recently near Cardiff, but productions frequently adapt older warehouses as studio space. The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol are also a convenient production base for shoots filming in South Wales.
