Stink destroys motor home filming in the Atacama Desert for beer brand Skol

Stink filmed a desert road trip on location in Chile’s Atacama Desert for beer brand Skol. Mountain features a group of friends relaxing on a wilderness adventure before a freak accident turns their empty motor home into a fireball but reveals a handy beer supply.

The Grand Canyon and Mexico’s Chihuahua Desert region were considered as filming locations before Stink’s Sao Paulo office honed in on Chile’s Atacama. While looking the part, it was also more affordable and convenient, and Stink had filmed there before.

“For us the range of possibilities with locations was a big challenge,” explain directors Jones+Tino: “Nothing was close. We visited many places and every displacement took two hours. In the end we had to choose and give up many fantastic places to shoot.”

The crew was in fact divided into two units for the five-day shoot. One team focussed on capturing the details of the more atmospheric shots as the characters enjoy their trip, and the other unit took care of the dramatic final seconds as the motor home rolls down a slope and explodes when it collides with a gas station.

Neither our bodies nor our minds worked completely at this altitude! That was tricky.

While the logistics were one challenge, they also needed to adapt to the environment.

“Altitude is a challenge,” the directors add: “In Costa Barros (4,200 metres above sea level) we had to slow down the shooting rhythm. Neither our bodies nor our minds worked completely at this altitude! That was tricky. We had a lot of Ibuprofen for the crew.”
