Canberra considers filming support for new series of political drama The Code

Australian capital Canberra is considering new funding support for a second series of acclaimed political drama The Code. The first series followed a journalist and his computer expert brother investigating a conspiracy in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) district of Canberra.

Local agency Screen ACT contributed AUD 200,000 in funding to the first series and a similar application is being considered for the second season, reports Fairfax Media.

The Code is a slickly-produced show that presents a modern and dramatic view of Canberra politics.

“It is the top end of our funding range,” said Monica Penders, director of Screen ACT, in comments to the outlet: “The Code has done incredibly well and has been sold all around the world. Canberra looks amazing so we definitely want more of those kinds of productions.”

“Canberra is now considered to be a viable production hub, which is really exciting,” Penders added.

“It took us a long time to get here but when you have got The Code and [upcoming political drama] Secret City and this level of drama that has never really been produced in Australia before starting to happen, and we're involved in two of the biggest, it is really exciting.”

Australia’s production industry has been boosted in the last couple of years by Angelina Jolie’s World War Two drama Unbroken and Dwayne Johnson’s earthquake drama San Andreas.

American cable channel Syfy is filming back-to-back TV productions at Docklands Studios in Melbourne and the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie will film in Queensland in the coming months.
