MPAA report: Location filming incentives a big hit for Massachusetts
A report from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) shows the success of filming incentives in Massachusetts. For every dollar issued in tax credits, the state made ten back in 2011 and films like The Fighter have increased production employment by nearly 50% since 2006.
Nearly USD40 million was paid out to productions in 2011 as part of the Massachusetts Film Tax Incentive Programme and the state got back USD375 million in direct spending. High-profile features like R.I.P.D. (above) continue to be drawn to the region.
“Today’s study reconfirms that incentivising productions creates jobs and generates enormous economic return for local and state economies,” said Senator Chris Dodd, who is MPAA Chairman and CEO: “Massachusetts is the latest example of a state that is benefiting tremendously from a thriving local film industry.
The impending completion of New England Studios is also an exciting addition to this growing industry and will attract even more films and television shows to the Commonwealth.

New England Studios is scheduled to open in the next few months in Devens near Boston. It will offer 126,000 square feet of production facilities including four 18,000-square-foot sound stages and is intended to help develop a fill-time production industry in Massachusetts.
