British Columbia officials draw on 2012 figures to call for filming support

Officials in British Columbia (BC) in Canada have drawn on production figures from 2012 to call for support for their filming industry. Figures from Burnaby in Vancouver - recently visited by Man of Steel - show the city made over CAD400 million from production spending last year.

Production professionals throughout British Columbia have been calling for an increase in the province’s location filming incentive. Production has slipped in recent months and there’s concern about competition from Ontario and Quebec, as well as a returning Provincial Sales Tax (PST), all of which may reduce production spending in places like Burnaby.

"It is estimated that the PST will cost the industry about CAD20 million a year in tax credits not received as compared to other jurisdictions," Burnaby’s director of planning and building Lou Pelletier told Burnaby Now: "This arises as (BC) is the only province which applies a (PST) to the film and television production industry."

Production has slipped in British Columbia in recent months and there’s concern about competition from Ontario and Quebec.

Burnaby hosted 131 separate productions in 2012 and these were supported by 72 different local businesses, according to the City report seen by the outlet. Zack Snyder’s upcoming Superman film Man of Steel (above) filmed partly at Burnaby’s Mammoth Studios.

British Columbia’s provincial government has so far resisted pressure to increase the location filming incentive.
