Lego Movie production company Animal Logic to open Vancouver office

Australian production company Animal Logic, responsible for international animated hit The Lego Movie, is set to open a new office in Vancouver this September. The Canadian branch is opening specifically to produce The Lego Movie Sequel, plus two additional movies.

Animal Logic CEO and co-founder Zareh Nalbandian reaffirmed the company’s commitment to Australia and confirmed that the firm’s Sydney office will produce franchise spinoffs Lego Batman and Ninjago.

“For the past 15 years we have had a truly collaborative and highly successful relationship with our friends at Warner Bros, and we are excited to be taking our collaboration to the next level on the production of a terrific slate of films in Vancouver,” Nalbandian commented.

“We remain committed to the Australian creative industries, and to continuing to produce great work in animation and visual effects.

“Our Sydney studio continues its focus on the current projects in production, as well as ongoing development of our growing slate of films being developed by Animal Logic Entertainment.”

Vancouver is one of Canada’s main production hubs. The province’s international appeal is partly due to its competitive filming incentive programme, which includes a 17.5% tax credit for Digital Animation and Visual Effects, which was expanded earlier this year.

Animal Logic produced The Lego Movie through a combination of traditional and computer-enhanced animation techniques, and production was supported by Australia’s 30% digital and visual effects incentive. The film was a huge international hit, quickly leading to plans for a series of sequels and spinoffs.

Work will start on The Lego Movie Sequel in Vancouver in January 2016.
