National Trust welcomes filming of Swallows and Amazons in Lake District

A new movie adaptation of Swallows and Amazons is being shot in the Lake District in north-west England and has been welcomed by the National Trust. Historical buildings managed by the organisation have appeared recently in the BBC’s period drama series Wolf Hall.

Swallows and Amazons is based on the 1930 novel by Arthur Ransome and tells a story inspired by the author’s experiences teaching friends to sail in the Lake District in the summer of 1929.

“We’re really lucky to have been part of this film,” said John Moffat, general manager for the National Trust in the south Lakes, in comments to the North West Evening Mail.

“It’s such a classic childhood story – one of my personal favourites - and one reason so many people now visit the Coniston area.

“Secret Harbour Productions choosing to film in our part of the Lakes reminds visitors how wonderful it is and helps us to continue to look after it for everyone to enjoy.”

Northern England is becoming a more popular filming location, especially for British TV productions, and local shoots can help boost film tourism.

National Trust properties won significant exposure in Wolf Hall, which tells a fictionalised story of political intrigue at the court of King Henry VIII in the 16th century. Wolf Hall was filmed entirely on location mainly around western England and around 40% of the historic buildings used for the shoot were under National Trust management.

“I think we can expect to see something in the region of a 25% increase in visitors,” said Harvey Edgington, Head of Filming and Locations at the National Trust, when Wolf Hall was first launched.

“[It’s] great news for these historic places as the additional revenue will help secure their future for generations to come.”
