Norwegian-Czech movie The Christmas King films at Barrandov Studios in Prague

New Norwegian-Czech feature The Christmas King – In Full Armour is filming at Barrandov Studios in Prague. Based on the Norwegian TV series Julekongen, the shoot has already filmed on location in the area, including at two nearby Czech castles.

Directed by Thale Persen, a veteran of the original TV series, the film will tell the story of a boy who discovers a pathway to the mystical Valley of Knights, where he befriends the king and helps him defend his throne.

The Czech Republic offers a 20% filming incentive for co-productions, which was a major factor in the decision to bring The Christmas King to Prague.

“Shooting in the Czech Republic has been great,” said Frederick Howard of Storm Films: “The local co-producer Film Kolektiv has been utterly professional, culturally adaptive and done all in their power to stay on budget while delivering a world-class product.”

Prague is a popular international filming location due to its incentive support and its studio infrastructure, and also because the city offers visuals that can easily double for many other parts of Europe.

Recent productions filming in the Prague area have included the BBC’s adventure series The Musketeers, which doubled the region for 17th century Paris, and the modern-day crime Crossing Lines, which recreated multiple European cities locally. Features have included the upcoming Child 44, which is set in Stalin’s Russia.

Last summer the Czech government increased the fund for the filming incentive to the equivalent of USD 40 million for a year, in a bid to attract more international productions.
