Sci-fi movie SFv1 to film on location in Sydney and South Australian Outback
New sci-fi film SFv1 is set to shoot on location in Sydney and in Outback regions of South Australia. The movie will tell a rescue story in a future where humanity has colonised other planets.
“With intense characters and relationships, unique action, VFX and set pieces, the way we are telling the story is not only unique but monumentally ambitious in every department,” said writer/director Shane Abbess: “To be able to make such an original film in such a risk-aversive time is a real gift.”
Science fiction productions are becoming more popular in Australia, with US cable channel Syfy making a commitment last year to film high-profile miniseries Hunters and Childhood’s End at Docklands Studios Melbourne.
“We have had a very productive and pleasant experience working with the Victorian Government getting Childhood’s End off the ground and we head into production in just a few weeks,” said Mark Binke, Executive Vice President of Universal Cable Productions, at the time.
“It was a natural choice for us to come back to Victoria with Hunters, which is one of our highest profile projects. We look forward to growing our relationships with Melbourne’s creative community and to continue collaborating with the team at Film Victoria.”
Australia is also hosting more big-budget international movies, with Pirates of the Caribbean 5 having recently shot in Queensland.
“The fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will be the largest international feature film ever to shoot in Australia and will focus the world’s attention on Australia as a leading film destination,” said Senator George Brandis, Federal Minister for the Arts, when the movie was first confirmed for Australia.
