Scottish government plans expert industry group to advise on film sector

The Scottish government will invite its film industry to form a new group to offer expert advice on how to support the country’s film sector. Scotland hosts the high-profile TV drama Outlander, but authorities have been criticised for failing to adequately develop the industry.

In a recent inquiry, Scotland’s production community criticised the conflicting remits of Creative Scotland and Scottish Enterprise. The lack of news regarding a state-funded studio continues to cause industry frustration.

A government response to the inquiry repeated commitment to developing studio facilities but did not offer further details.

“We are determined to maximise the economic, social and cultural benefits our creative industries can deliver,” said Fiona Hyslop, Scotland’s Cabinet Secretary for Culture, Europe and External Affairs, of the plan to form a panel of experts.

“The measures we are announcing today will help us to better understand and respond to the needs of the creative industries in Scotland and ensure the government and its agencies are working more effectively and collaboratively for their benefit.”

Studio development has been a pressing issue in Scotland for some time, with the production industry pushing for a purpose-built facility. The government’s favoured option is reportedly Wardpark Studios in Cumbernauld near Glasgow, a former warehouse facility that was adapted by the Outlander production team.

Plans were submitted last month for a privately-funded studio complex outside Edinburgh, which would include multiple stages and water tank facilities.

“We look forward to creating a world-class facility to complement Scotland’s existing studio spaces and stunning locations,” said Jim O’Donnell, Development Director of PSL Land.
