Tim Burton to film new movie partially on location in Florida’s Tampa Bay
Filmmaker Tim Burton will spend a couple of weeks shooting his new movie in the Tampa Bay region of Florida’s Gulf Coast after local filming incentives were created for him. Burton’s adaptation of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will film mostly in the UK.
Two local film commissions in Tampa have joined forces to offer a local filming incentive worth USD 200,000, which has helped secure the shoot.
“Landing Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a coup for Tampa Bay,” said Dale Gordon, executive director of the Tampa Hillsborough Film and Digital Media Commission, in comments to Tampa Bay Business Journal.
“The book is the first in a best-selling series. If the Burton adaptation proves successful, there is the potential for a new film franchise to fill the gap left by the conclusion of the Harry Potter series – and high-profile repeat business for professionals and companies in Tampa Bay who would supply goods and services for the filming of those sequels here.”
Florida has had no money in its film fund for the past few years, leaving its 20% filming incentive essentially redundant. State authorities will decide in the next few months whether or not to replenish the fund, but politicians disagree on whether or not the filming incentive truly benefits Florida’s economy.
Despite the lack of an effective formal state-wide filming incentive, a new studio facility – the Miami Entertainment Complex – is currently being developed in central Miami to be managed by EUE/Screen Gems.
A different group of developers is planning to build a separate studio facility in Miami-Dade County that would offer multiple sound stages and water tanks.
