Inaugural US China Film & TV Industry Expo to take place in Los Angeles

The inaugural US China Film & TV Industry (UCFTI) Expo is set to take place 15-16 September 2014. Scheduled for the Los Angeles Convention Center, the Expo will set out to further develop working relationships between the US and Chinese production industries.

“Both the US and China boast thriving film and television industries but do not necessarily take advantage of each other's strengths and resources,” said Bianca Chen, Chief Executive Officer of the UCFTI Expo: “Our goal is to provide a platform for both countries’ industry players to build professional ties and encourage job creation, creative sharing and learning."

“In 2012, China became the world's second largest movie market by total box office, which makes this the perfect time for US and China industry leaders to collaborate and leverage this success for both media powerhouses,” Chen added.

The Expo will clarify “industry processes” in each country, with half the exhibitors being from the US and half from China. Production and post-production equipment will be among the resources showcased. In addition, panel discussions will talk about how to navigate production regulations in China, as well as financing opportunities.

China and the US are increasingly working together on major productions as the American studios look for ways to access the lucrative Chinese market. There is a strict annual quota on the number of international films that can be distributed in China, but big-budget movies can sometimes sidestep these restrictions by establishing themselves as official co-productions.

Transformers: Age of Extinction has sought greater access to the Chinese market by filming scenes in Hong Kong and other parts of the country. Johnny Depp’s new sci-fi movie Transcendence has been the latest Hollywood film to organise a comprehensive promotional tour of Chinese cities.
