Pulse Films shoots new Chemical Brothers promo on location in Spain
Pulse Films shot on location in Teruel, eastern Spain, for a new promo for the Chemical Brothers track Sometimes I Feel So Deserted. Framed like an extract from a surreal road movie, the film follows an apparently injured woman fleeing determined pursuers.
Location options were considered across Spain, and in Morocco and South Africa – all popular and film-friendly parts of the world for desert locations – before the production team settled on Teruel. Local servicing was provided by 24/7 Barcelona.
“We were looking for a deserted landscape and Teruel was perfect for what we were looking to produce,” says director Ninian Doff.
“We shot it in a very strange, very flat, lifeless space. The shoot was exhausting and relentless: we suffered thunder and lightning storms, floods (in a desert!) and military police clamp downs.
“Despite all of that, we managed to shoot everything - and of course I have to give a huge thanks to the amazing crew, including my producer team Rik Green and Zak Razvi, and the cast who battled on alongside me despite the storm clouds growing above us.
“Music videos aren’t commercials - you’ve essentially spent every penny and pulled in every favour you can just to get to shooting and so you can imagine how stressful all that was.”
Spain is in the process of launching a new 15% filming incentive for productions shooting on the mainland. The country got a big boost last year hosting scenes for Game of Thrones for the first time, and the series is returning to regions including Catalonia over the next few months.
Major feature films shot in Spain in the last couple of years have included Ridley Scott’s biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, which built huge sets in the deserts of Andalucia.
