Miami plans new studio facility to help boost filming production

Authorities in Miami are looking to develop a new studio to boost the Florida city’s production industry and appeal to more shoots like TV drama Burn Notice. A private company would operate the studio in retrofitted premises, but the building would remain under the city’s ownership.

“Hopefully [it will] attract the movie industry back to South Florida and give them an up-to date facility to shoot movies, TV shows [and] TV commercials,” said Pieter Bockweg, executive director of the Miami Omni Community Redevelopment Agency, in comments to NBC South Florida.

The city plans to provide a supporting investment of USD10 million to whoever secures the studio retrofit project.

South Florida has had difficulty securing a long-term English-language TV series in recent years. Long-running spy drama Burn Notice was a notable exception but recently came to an end after a seven-season run. High-profile Miami-set US dramas Dexter and CSI: Miami were in fact filmed on location in California.
