Atomic bomb TV drama Manhattan to start filming in New Mexico
New TV drama Manhattan will start filming in New Mexico later this month. Crime drama Breaking Bad boosted the state and the new series will tell the story of the infamous Manhattan Project that led to the development of the first atomic bombs in the US during World War II.
“We are extremely pleased to welcome the producers of Manhattan to New Mexico,” said New Mexico State Film Office Director Nick Maniatis: “With them, they bring a story that touches on our state and nation’s history, and we look forward to providing them with top-notch crew, facilities and vendors to aid in the telling of their story.”
Added New Mexico’s Governor Susana Martinez: “The fact that they have chosen to film right here in New Mexico demonstrates that we remain competitive in recruiting films and TV series to our state.”
New Mexico offers a base 25% filming incentive that rises to 30% for TV productions. The television increase was introduced after the international success of crime drama Breaking Bad, which spent five seasons filming in Albuquerque.

The state continues to attract high-profile TV shows, with adventure drama Hieroglyph confirmed for a local shoot that will be based at Albuquerque Studios and will be set in ancient Egypt. New Mexico recently doubled for the mountains of Afghanistan in the true-life war drama Lone Survivor and was also a filming location for Johnny Depp’s upcoming sci-fi movie Transcendence.
Manhattan is being produced by Tribune Studios, Skydance Television and Lionsgate Television and will hire about 200 local crew.
