BBC closes picturesque Cornish cove for Poldark filming
The BBC closed a cove in the Cornish town of Porthwgarra on the south-west tip of England as they filmed scenes for new period drama Poldark. Production is based at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol, but filming is also taking place in Cornwall where the story is set.
Poldark was previously adapted by the BBC in the mid-70s, running for nearly 30 episodes over two years.
“We are filming a huge amount in Cornwall - substantially more than in the original TV series,” publicist Lisa Vanoli told local paper the Cornishman: “All our key landscapes will be in Cornwall - including Ross Poldark’s house - but occasionally you have to go outside an area. Unfortunately, in Truro (a Cornish town) it just wasn’t possible, which is why we’ve had to film some street scenes in Corsham (Wiltshire).”
Historical drama New Worlds filmed at The Bottle Yard last year and the studios will also be used as the base of operations for the Disney TV series Galavant in the coming months. The facility is the closest studio space to the Cornish filming locations sought by the Poldark production team.

Bristol has become more popular as a filming location and also offers easy access to Wales, which has a soaring international profile. The BBC has a production base at Roath Lock in Cardiff and also films its fantasy drama series Atlantis in converted facilities in nearby Chepstow. American fantasy drama Da Vinci’s Demons recently confirmed it will be filming a third series in the Swansea area, doubling the region for Renaissance Italy.
Poldark is set in the late 18th Century and is also filming on location in historic homes in the Bristol area, including the Elizabethan-era Chavenage House.
