BBC films second series of crime drama The Fall in Northern Ireland

The BBC has returned to Northern Ireland to film a second series of its hit crime drama The Fall. Set and shot in Belfast, the series continues the story of Jamie Dorman’s serial killer evading the police led by Gillian Anderson’s Detective Superintendent.

“Setting The Fall in Belfast and the surrounding area was an easy choice for me,” said writer Allan Cubitt: “I've always found Northern Ireland a fascinating place, culturally and geographically, and I already had a great working relationship with [executive producer] Stephen Wright and BBC NI.

“Having the city as a backdrop - hopefully almost a character in itself - also allowed me to draw on the disproportionate amount of home-grown acting talent there is. I really hope that seeing those actors - some relatively new to the screen - working alongside someone as iconic and potent as Gillian Anderson will make for compelling viewing.”

Northern Ireland has become an internationally renowned filming location through hosting HBO’s long-running fantasy drama Game of Thrones, and vampire movie Dracula Untold recently doubled the region for Eastern Europe.

Otherwise, Northern Ireland mostly hosts British films and TV shows. The BBC also filmed the second series of its crime drama Line of Duty in Belfast, although the city is not specifically identified in the show.

Belfast’s Titanic Studios, home to Game of Thrones, won permission over the summer to build two new sound stages. In addition, Northern Ireland Screen has had its budget for the next four years increased by more than 50%.
