HBO series Lewis and Clark prepares for Alberta and British Columbia filming

New HBO miniseries Lewis and Clark is in pre-production for a scheduled summer shoot in southern Alberta, Canada, and then later in Vancouver and also Georgia. The second series of the acclaimed TV version of Fargo is among the current high-profile shoots in Alberta.

Lewis and Clark will tell the story of soldiers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. The duo led an 18-month expedition to establish an American presence west of the Mississippi River in the early 19th century, shortly after America’s vast land acquisition known as the Louisiana Purchase.

Casey Affleck and Matthias Schoenaerts will star as the explorers and the miniseries’ heavyweight producers include Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt and Edward Norton.

“In Lewis and Clark we can see American idealism and the breathtaking natural beauty of the continent, as well as the complexities and tragedies of what came to be known as America's manifest destiny,” said HBO programming president Michael Lombardo recently: “We are tremendously excited to bring together this incredible group of talents to tell a seminal American story.”

Alberta is becoming more popular as a filming location that frequently doubles for the American Mid-West. Calgary will soon offer a purpose-built film studio with more than 80,000 sq ft of production space in a move that could help boost Alberta’s production sector.

Leonardo DiCaprio is currently filming period survival drama The Revenant in Alberta with filmmaker Alejandro G Iñárritu. The project had to schedule a nine-month filming schedule to properly accommodate travel times to a series of remote locations in the Canadian province.
