Historical drama The Secret River to film on location in Australia
Historical drama miniseries The Secret River is to film on location in Victoria and New South Wales in Australia. Based on the award-winning novel by Kate Grenville, the drama follows the exploits of some of the first European colonists in New South Wales in the early 19th Century.
The production is scheduled to spend eight weeks filming on location in Victoria and also further north around the Hawkesbury River near Sydney.
“It’s thrilling and exciting that we will begin filming next week with such a stunning cast and a brilliant and committed team behind the cameras, including our wonderful director Daina Reid, screenwriters Jan Sardi and Mac Gudgeon, production designer Herbert Pinter, DoP Bruce Young and costume designer Edie Kurzer,” commented producer Stephen Luby.
“It has been a long journey to bring this project to the screen and I am very grateful to the ABC for supporting this powerful and moving Australian story.”
The news regarding The Secret River comes shortly after major historical miniseries Deadline Gallipoli was announced for location filming in South Australia, west of Victoria. Based at Adelaide Studios, the drama will focus on a team of war correspondents covering the disastrous Gallipoli campaign in 1915 during World War I.

Australia also has a history of hosting international TV dramas. Queensland doubled for the Pacific islands in the World War II miniseries The Pacific and the region also stood in for prehistoric Earth in the short-lived sci-fi drama Terra Nova.
More recently, Queensland has hosted Angelina’s Jolie’s World War II feature Unbroken and Dwayne Johnson’s disaster movie San Andreas.
