Hit BBC crime drama The Fall to return to Northern Ireland filming locations

Belfast is set to host a third season of the BBC's hit serial killer drama The Fall. Gillian Anderson will return to star as Detective Inspector Stella Gibson on the trail of Jamie Dornan’s disturbed murderer Paul Spector.

“I want programme makers to come to BBC Two to do their most distinctive and signature work,” said Kim Shillinglaw, Controller of BBC Two.

“I’m therefore delighted that [writer/director] Allan Cubitt and the team are bringing The Fall back for a third series, demonstrating once again the continued strength of drama on the channel.”

Added Gub Neal, a producer for Artists Studio: “It’s thrilling to be continuing the story between Stella Gibson and Paul Spector. A third season gives Allan Cubitt and Artists Studio a chance to pursue the investigation in a way that few crime dramas ever do and complete a cycle of events which will have held audiences for over three years.”

Northern Ireland remains a popular filming location and has been given a sustained international profile boost as the production base for Game of Thrones. Titanic Studios in Belfast won approval last summer to invest GBP 14 million building two new sound stages.

Other high-profile productions filming in Northern Ireland include The Truth Commissioner, a fictional story set during the peace process in the aftermath of The Troubles. New TV drama The Frankenstein Chronicles is also filming locally, with former Game of Thrones star Sean Bean. Last year Northern Ireland doubled for Transylvania in Dracula Untold.

“Securing Dracula Untold was a real coup for Northern Ireland; aside from the direct economic benefit it is a wonderful showcase for the region’s locations and skills,” said Richard Williams, Chief Executive of Northern Ireland Screen, at the time of the film’s release.
